Wicklow East Sinn Féin candidate in the upcoming local elections Brian Fogarty has called on Irish Rail to put in place measures to help minimise disruption for rail users in the Greystones and East Wicklow area, following recent disruptions to train services in the Greystones area over the Easter weekend. Services will be placed under further challenges in the coming weeks with works shutting down services between Bray and Grand Canal Dock, and Leinster playing to a packed-out crowd in Croke Park on the Saturday.
Fogarty said:
“Following recent disruptions to train services over the Easter weekend, Greystones rail users are set to face further challenges next weekend, from May 4th to May 6th, with no service between Bray and Grand Canal Dock. This disruption will impact workers commuting beyond Bray and local businesses in the Greystones area, potentially resulting in a loss of trade and visitors.
With Leinster scheduled to play in a sold-out match at Croke Park on Saturday, May 4th, supporters will also be significantly affected by the lack of train services.
While the essential nature of engineering works is well understood, it is important to explore alternative solutions to minimize the impact on service users. I am urging authorities to consider options such as late-night works or implementing partial services to mitigate the constant disruption experienced by commuters.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. More disruption to services is anticipated on Saturday, May 18th, and again in June, highlighting the urgency for comprehensive solutions to address these recurring issues.
I am calling upon relevant stakeholders to prioritize the needs of commuters and local businesses and work towards implementing measures which will ensure reliable and accessible public transportation services.”
