Sinn Féin for Wicklow, John Brady, has lent his full support to the Save The Donkeys Rathnew campaign, following a visit to meet with owners of Wags and Trey, Gerry, and Sandra. The couple, who have been caring for several rescue donkeys, are currently experiencing difficulties stemming from what appear to be minor and bureaucratic issues with Donkey Sanctuary Ireland.
Speaking after the visit, Deputy Brady said:
“I had the opportunity today to visit Gerry and Sandra at their home in Rathnew, where they have been looking after three rescued donkeys in immaculate conditions. Their dedication to the animals is absolutely clear – the donkeys are part of their family, and it’s evident how much love and care they put into looking after them”.
Deputy Brady was joined by local Sinn Féin representative, Anthony Hill for the visit, during which both listened to the couple outline the challenges they are currently facing.
“The issues raised seem to be minor bureaucratic and could be resolved with a bit of common sense and good will”, Brady continued. “While no one disputes the importance of upholding animal welfare standards, these donkeys are clearly well loved and looked after. People were constantly calling by to visit them while we were there, and car after car beeped in support of the campaign as they passed”.
Brady urged others to get behind the campaign and to show support for Gerry and Sandra’s efforts.
“I would encourage anyone who cares about animal welfare, or who believes in community spirit, to find out more about the Save The Donkeys Rathnew campaign on Facebook. These donkeys are loved and cherished by Gerry, Sandra, their family, and the wider community – and their care should not be undermined by red tape. I sincerely hope that common sense will prevail, and that Wags and Trey can stay in their loving home”. ENDS
